Book Review: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Title: Me Before You
Author: Jojo Moyes
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
Subject: Living with a disability
Publisher: Penguin
Release date: January 2012
Length: 482 pages
I got this book: borrowed it from the library

Summary:
From Goodreads:
"Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.
Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that. What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time."

Personal opinion:
This blurb is highly misleading because it makes you easily mistake this book for a light chick-lit. It is not. Not remotely close, in fact. The book touches upon how it can be to live your life with a severe disability and what choices you still have left. Choices are very limited if you have to depend on others for almost every essential thing. Lou leads a safe life and Will wants her to push her boundaries, he wants her to actually live more of a life than the small life that she leads. Will and Lou come from different places, different social classes and have a very different look on life and Will challenges Lou constantly. The thing is that I can't tell too much about this book or else I will be giving too much away. But the author doesn't shy away from difficult subjects. The best thing about this book is that she does this without it feeling too heavy. Still it left me thinking and it made a deep impression on me. I don't rate books with 5 stars very often, but this books leaves me no choice. Don't look up too much about this book, just get it and let it take you by surprise.

Loved it!

  1. I've seen a few reviews of this book and I've yet to see a negative one. The cover definitely seems to be misleading!
